The first step in cleaning or repairs will be to at least partially disassemble the air conditioner.

Check the air conditioner power supply cord for any signs of fraying or damage. Window ac not cooling a window or room air conditioner that doesn t cool may need to be recharged with refrigerant but the chances are good it simply needs to be cleaned.

Also this same information applies to through the wall air conditioners which are basically the same thing as window ac units. A window air conditioner won t turn on if the fuse of the main power source to the unit has blown. Too few btus means your unit has to work harder. If your window air conditioner won t turn on it may be that it is not getting any power.

If that is the case fix it by replacing the fuse wire. In hot humid weather that s normal as long as it only forms while the unit is working. If your air conditioner isn t turning on first check your unit outside to determine if the condenser is running. No matter which type of air conditioner you have a clogged filter restricts airflow decreasing efficiency and reducing the ability to effectively cool the air.

Once the fuse has been replaced check the machine by running it again. A window air conditioning unit that is constantly cycling on or off can usually be traced back to a thermostat or temperature sensor that is on the fritz and no longer working the way that it should. Check the receptacle with a tester or plug in a known working appliance such as a lamp or a fan to verify that the circuit is live. The unit must tilt toward the outside from at least 1 4 to 1 2 inch in order to properly drain condensation from the base pan to the outside.
